In Bucharest, there are many famous buildings and monuments.
One of the most important buildings is the Palace of Parliament, built in 1980 during the communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Currently, it is the largest building in Europe and second largest in the world. "People's House" is now Romanian Parliament (Chamber of Deputies and Senate) and hosts the National Museum of Contemporary Art. At the same time it is one of the largest convention centers in the world.
Press House Or Scanteii House (as was known during the communist period), was built on the site of the old racecourse was Baneasa. Raising the building lasted between 1952 and 1957. Building project was developed by architect Horia Maicu, which was inspired by the Lomonosov University in Moscow. In front of the Press House is now empty pedestal of the statue of Lenin, the huge statue, placed there in September 1960 and demolished in March 1990. Demolition gesture was one of revenge for the memory of black communist period. Another great building is the Arch of Triumph which was built in 1935 and was made after the Arch of Triumph from Paris.
Athenaeum is considered a symbol of Romanian culture and since 2007 is on the list of European heritage attractions.
Other cultural sites include the National Art Museum, Museum of Natural History "Grigore Antipa", Museum of Romanian Peasant and National Museum of Military History.
